چکیده

Described by Jean Chevaillier in 1967, autogenic drainage is an airway clearance technique that is widely used throughout Europe. The echnique is characterised by breathing control, where the individual adjusts the rate, depth and location of respiration in order to clear the hest of secretions independently. This paper describes the technique, based on the work of Chevaillier, offering a physiological explanation or how the technique works. This paper will also review the evidence supporting the use of autogenic drainage. 2006 Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Forced expiratory technique, directed cough, and autogenic drainage.

In health, secretions produced in the respiratory tract are cleared by mucociliary transport, cephalad airflow bias, and cough. In disease, increased secretion viscosity and volume, dyskinesia of the cilia, and ineffective cough combine to reduce secretion clearance, leading to increased risk of infection. In obstructive lung disease these conditions are further complicated by early collapse of...

Comparison of Autogenic Drainage & Active Cycle Breathing Techniques on FEV , FVC & PEFR in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Airway clearance is integral to the management of COPD, yet there is no evidence as to the optimal modality. This study was conducted to compare the efficacy of two chest clearance techniques, autogenic drainage and active cycle breathing in COPD patients.Thirty subjects who were 40 60 years of age and had moderate chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder were allocated randomly into three groups...

Chest physiotherapy in cystic fibrosis: a comparative study of autogenic drainage and the active cycle of breathing techniques with postural drainage.

BACKGROUND--Autogenic drainage has been suggested as an alternative method of chest physiotherapy in patients with cystic fibrosis. In this study autogenic drainage was compared with the active cycle of breathing techniques (ACBT) together with postural drainage. METHODS--Eighteen patients with cystic fibrosis took part in a randomised two-day crossover trial. There were two sessions of one met...

Comparison of Effects of Flutter Device versus Autogenic Drainage on Peak Expiratory Flow Rate, Oxygen Saturation, Respiratory Rate and Pulse Rate in COPD Patients

In an earlier comparative study reported between Flutter device and Autogenic Drainage, Skaria et al. [5], found that Flutter device is more effective than the forced expiratory technique i.e. Autogenic Drainage. They reported greater improvement in terms of oxygen saturation and peak expiratory flow rate in the patients of moderate chronic bronchitis, who had used Flutter device. Ernst et al. ...

The Short-Term Effect of Breathing Tasks Via an Incentive Spirometer on Lung Function Compared With Autogenic Drainage in Subjects With Cystic Fibrosis.

BACKGROUND Forced expiration may assist secretion movement by manipulating airway dynamics in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). Expiratory resistive breathing via a handheld incentive spirometer has the potential to control the expiratory flow via chosen resistances (1-8 mm) and thereby mobilize secretions and improve lung function. Our objective was to explore the short-term effect of using ...
